Checked against official sources on 1 October 2026. Rules and conditions are set by Nelson Airport — confirm with them before you go.
A flat airport-perimeter loop from McLaren Drive with marked aircraft-viewing locations, partly unsealed footing and occasional service vehicles.
Use the airport's current entrance
Plan the circuit from McLaren Drive, the start and finish identified by Nelson Airport. Older council directions describe a different approach, so use the airport's current walkway page and on-site map for the route layout. The operator describes a roughly five-kilometre loop but does not supply a walking time on that page. Allow your own margin for stops rather than presenting the older council estimate as a verified duration for the renewed alignment.
Share the perimeter carefully
The airport calls the path flat and easy, while noting uneven unsealed sections and occasional service vehicles. Keep children alongside an adult when a vehicle approaches and stop somewhere clear of the walking line. Aircraft-viewing panels offer designated places to look through the security fence. Use those viewpoints without crossing barriers or obstructing others. The circuit can be an outing in its own right; there is no need to time it around a particular aircraft movement.
Leave space for unhurried stops
Bring water and clothing appropriate to the forecast if you intend to linger at the viewing points. Keep your attention on the path while moving, then stop before taking photographs. Drones are prohibited around the airport. A past reopening event is not a guarantee of access on the day you visit, so check the current walkway information and signs. If somebody tires, reassess the remaining loop before continuing rather than relying on the easy label alone.
Read the official track description and notices immediately before travelling. The source-check date is not a live access or safety report.
