Work west from Picton through Nelson and Motueka, then allow two Golden Bay days before returning to Motueka without a same-day ferry deadline.
This is a suggested itinerary, not a booked package or a guarantee that roads, walks or overnight sites are available.
Day 1: Picton arrival without a cross-region transfer
Begin in Picton with accommodation arranged independently of your arrival transport. If coming by ferry, treat its actual arrival as the start of the day rather than planning a long drive immediately afterwards. Collect supplies and settle into the chosen base before a brief town outing. Review the Nelson journey in the evening and keep tomorrow's departure flexible. A delayed crossing should shorten sightseeing, not create pressure to drive unfamiliar roads while tired.
Overnight: Picton
Day 2: Picton to Nelson on a checked route
Travel from Picton to Nelson using the route that current highway and local-road advice supports. Do not select a Sounds detour solely because its map line appears attractive. Make proper rest stops and reach your confirmed Nelson base before deciding on any local outing. Refill the food box and review the next accommodation move. Keeping this as a transfer day avoids combining a ferry recovery, cross-region drive and national-park walk into one demanding schedule.
Overnight: Nelson
Day 3: Move to Motueka and prepare a walking day
Move on to Motueka, checking the current road route before leaving Nelson. Use the afternoon to settle in and prepare a day pack for a modest Abel Tasman visit. Decide how far the group is comfortable walking back as well as out; tomorrow is not a through-hike. Leave water taxis out unless separately confirmed. Staying in Motueka again tomorrow means the walking day can end with dry clothes and dinner at an already familiar base.
Overnight: Motueka
Day 4: Marahau out-and-back without a boat deadline
Visit the Marahau entrance and take a deliberately limited out-and-back on the Coast Track after checking DOC notices. Agree the turnaround before setting off rather than letting Anchorage become an accidental target. Carry lunch and keep enough energy for the same route home. Return to Motueka instead of treating a track campsite as an unplanned overnight option. If walking conditions are poor, keep the day local and preserve tomorrow's transfer as a separate decision.
Overnight: Motueka
Day 5: Cross to a Takaka base
Review SH60 information before leaving Motueka for Takaka and give the hill crossing the day's attention. Choose confirmed accommodation around Takaka rather than driving straight to a remote road-end campsite. Unpack, organise tomorrow's food and check the Wainui Falls advice. Do not add the falls today just because the transfer went smoothly. Keeping the afternoon simple makes it easier to respond to road delays without losing daylight for finding the correct accommodation entrance.
Overnight: Takaka area
Day 6: Wainui Falls only in suitable conditions
Choose Wainui Falls only after checking recent rain, DOC advice and the approach from your Takaka base. The unbridged stream is a reason to abandon the outing when water is high, not a challenge to negotiate. Stay on the track at the waterfall and return by the same route. Keep the rest of the day free for a meal and drying equipment. A Takaka day without the walk is the planned alternative, not a failed itinerary.
Overnight: Takaka area
Day 7: Return to Motueka without a ferry deadline
Retrace the checked SH60 route to Motueka, allowing the return journey to stand on its own. Do not attach a Picton ferry departure or a distant vehicle return to this day. Finish with a final Motueka stay if arranged, or an onward plan that genuinely allows for the road conditions. If the hill route is disrupted, discuss your accommodation options before moving. Remaining in confirmed shelter is preferable to chasing an unverified alternative crossing.
Overnight: Motueka; optional final night
Plan the road return as well as arrival
Nelson Tasman's official guide supports the Picton road connection. NZTA's Takaka Hill project identifies the SH60 corridor, but historical repairs do not establish today's status. Check Journey Planner and local approaches before each move. This trip finishes in Motueka; reaching Picton, a ferry or an airport afterwards needs separate time and arrangements.
Keep accommodation separate from track access
Arrange Picton, Nelson, Motueka and Takaka-area stays directly. The Marahau outing returns on foot and includes no water taxi or Great Walk overnight booking. Do not convert it into a through-walk without researching tides, transport and accommodation afresh. Final-night stays are optional and no listed base has been checked for available pitches.
Use Golden Bay's second day cautiously
DOC warns that Wainui's unbridged stream and lookout can flood during or after heavy rain. Stay around Takaka if conditions are unsuitable; the spare day is not permission to cross high water. If SH60 disruption prevents the Golden Bay move, retain a confirmed Motueka base and omit that section rather than assuming another road connection.
