A campervan relocation is a discounted hire offered to move a vehicle between depots within an agreed time. It can suit flexible travel, but a low daily rate is not the total cost of the trip. Confirm an actual offer before arranging flights or accommodation.

What you trade for the discount

A relocation is a transport task for the rental company as well as a trip for you. The pickup location, destination and return deadline may be fixed. There may be limited kilometres or no option to extend the hire.

Spaceships explains the difference between relocations and ordinary one-way rentals. Its page said the 2026 relocation season was over when reviewed on 24 September 2026. That is a dated observation, not a prediction about later offers.

Travellers Autobarn's relocation page publishes offers and conditions, but those must be checked for your particular dates. A listing is not a confirmed reservation.

Compare the complete cost

Item Confirm before booking
Hire Included days, pickup and return times, extra-day conditions
Distance Included kilometres and charges beyond them
Fuel Required return level and any allowance
Ferry Who books it, vehicle dimensions and passenger costs
Cover Included protection, excess and optional upgrades
Bond Amount, card requirements and release arrangements
Other charges Road user charges, cleaning, equipment and administration
Disruption Late return, cancellation and vehicle substitution terms

Ask for unclear conditions in writing. Do not assume a free vehicle ferry also means free passenger tickets, or that a bond is your maximum possible liability.

Add flights, meals and lawful overnight stays to the comparison. A normal hire may be more practical if it avoids rushed driving or costly connecting travel.

Build the route backwards from the deadline

Allow for pickup paperwork, grocery and fuel stops, ferry check-in, rest and a final refuel or clean. Do not allocate every available hour to sightseeing.

Use the driving guide and check current road conditions. If a ferry or road delay would make the contract impossible, discuss the contingency with the operator before accepting the deal.

Our South Island route ideas are optional sightseeing frameworks, not routes guaranteed to fit a relocation allowance.

Confirm the vehicle, not just its category

Ask about the sleeping layout, bedding, cooking equipment and suitable child restraints where relevant. Check that your licence and the rental agreement allow you to drive the supplied vehicle.

For freedom camping, check the vehicle's current certification. PGDB confirms that blue warrants no longer count from 7 June 2026. A rental description or sticker alone is not sufficient.

Read the national freedom camping guide and each local authority's rules. Alternatively, choose campgrounds that accept your setup. A discounted van is not an exemption from overnight restrictions.

Before you accept

  • Obtain written dates, depots, inclusions and return requirements.
  • Check the bond and all possible charges.
  • Confirm ferry arrangements and realistic driving time.
  • Check licence eligibility and the actual vehicle's certification.
  • Verify bedding and cooking equipment, then use the packing list.
  • Keep a lawful overnight alternative and a plan for delays.

Frequently asked questions

Are relocations always available?

No. Routes, vehicles and dates depend on the operator's fleet needs. Confirm an actual offer before buying flights or planning the trip.

Does free hire include fuel or the ferry?

Not automatically. Check the written inclusions for the specific booking, including whether a ferry allowance covers passengers as well as the vehicle.

Can I extend a relocation?

Only if the operator permits it. Confirm any extra days and charges in writing rather than assuming a normal rental extension is available.

Can I freedom camp in a relocation van?

Only where your vehicle and setup meet the applicable rules. Confirm certification and use permitted sites, or book campgrounds that accept the vehicle.
