Camping & hiking questions

Camping

Where should I start with camping in New Zealand?

Start with the campsite directory and decide what facilities your group needs. A serviced holiday park, a basic DOC campsite and a permitted freedom-camping location are not interchangeable. Read the specific place guide and the operator's current conditions before deciding.

Can I book a campsite through Outdoor Next?

No. Reservations and payments are made directly with the official operator linked from each guide. We do not display live availability or reserve spaces, and our guide is not a booking confirmation.

DOC camping and bookings

Does a campsite listing mean I can freedom camp nearby?

No. Camping permission applies to the specific land and rules set by its operator or authority. Check the council or DOC source for your exact location, vehicle and dates. A parking space, nearby campsite or scenic area does not establish overnight permission.

Hiking & preparation

How do I choose a suitable walk?

Compare the official track grade, distance, expected time, terrain and access requirements with your group's experience. Our regional guides are a starting point, not a substitute for a current forecast and the official track information.

What is the difference between hiking and tramping?

Our hiking section includes day walks, longer tramps and preparation guides. The label alone does not describe difficulty: use each track's official grade and conditions rather than assuming a walk is easy because of its name.

Where can I check weather, road access and closures?

The conditions directory links to DOC alerts, MetService warnings and NZTA journey information. Outdoor Next does not operate a live alert service. Check the relevant authority close to departure and again when plans change.

Do the directories include every campsite and track?

No. The campsite and walking-track directories cover curated places with source links. Nearby distances, where verified location points are available, are straight-line estimates, not road or walking distances, access approval or evidence of available space. Regional browsing works without sharing your location.

Where is my packing checklist saved?

Packing progress and custom items are stored in this browser, separately for each trip mode. They do not sync to another device. Clearing browser storage removes the saved list, and private browsing or storage restrictions can prevent persistence.

What does the last-checked date mean?

It records an editorial source review, not a live report or a guarantee that a place is open today. Research-based guides are not presented as firsthand visits, and equipment advice is not a claim of independent field testing.

Where can I see all published pages?

The site map groups all public guides by topic, alongside regional directories and preparation tools. Draft articles and superseded versions are not included.
