Make Motueka the base for a waterfront afternoon, a self-contained Marahau day walk and a flexible Kaiteriteri outing without a boat-dependent return.
This is a suggested itinerary, not a booked package or a guarantee that roads, walks or overnight sites are available.
Day 1: Nelson to Motueka, then the inlet
Travel from Nelson to Motueka and settle into the town campground before taking a section of the Waterfront Walk beside the inlet. Choose your own turnaround rather than treating the complete path as an arrival-day requirement. Shop for tomorrow's lunch and keep the vehicle ready for a day trip without dismantling camp. If arrival is late or the shoreline is windy, make this a food-and-rest afternoon and walk later.
Overnight: Motueka
Day 2: Marahau to Tinline, with optional extension
Drive to Marahau and begin on the Coast Track causeway, making Tinline the first decision point. Add its nature walk or continue towards another signed bay only while leaving ample energy for the same-way return. You are sampling the southern end, not trying to reach every famous beach. Carry lunch and drinking water, then return to Motueka. No water taxi is needed to make this day's walking work.
Overnight: Motueka
Day 3: Kaiteriteri or a recovered walking day
Choose a relaxed Kaiteriteri beach visit if the weather suits, leaving the afternoon open back in Motueka. If yesterday was unsuitable, use this day for the Marahau walk instead and omit the beach excursion. A commercial boat or kayak outing would be a separately arranged replacement, not an automatic extra. Return to the same campground before packing for onward travel, with no requirement to cross into Golden Bay during this short stay.
Overnight: Motueka
A town camp is not a Great Walk booking
Confirm the Motueka pitch category, particularly for tents and awnings. Staying in town does not reserve any Coast Track hut or campsite. This plan returns to the vehicle each day; overnight walking would need a new route, bookings and equipment. Its cover is a licensed packing illustration, not an Abel Tasman photograph.
Keep transport optional
DOC identifies Marahau as the southern walking entrance and says walking from Kaiteriteri to that entrance is not advisable. Drive to the intended start. If substituting a boat-assisted walk, confirm both legs and cancellation arrangements first. In rough weather, choose a town rest day rather than relying on an unconfirmed pickup or attempting a distant tidal crossing.
