A Botanical Hill ascent from Nelson's Botanical Reserve, with time needed for the descent and a listed closure affecting the separate East Ridge route.
Start below Botanical Hill
Approach from Botanical Reserve across the footbridge at the end of Hardy Street, or from the Maitai Walkway near that bridge. Read the interpretation panel at the foot of the hill before climbing. Council's broad time range describes reaching the top, not the complete return visit. Allow separately for the descent and viewing stops. A short urban approach should not obscure that this is an uphill outing, particularly when walking with somebody who needs frequent rests.
Use the viewpoint without adding a circuit
At the top, seating and information panels provide a reason to pause and identify Nelson's landscape. The name refers to the hill's historical surveying role, not a promise that you are standing at the country's geographical centre. Enjoy the view without making every neighbouring trail part of the plan. No measured route distance or formal difficulty grade has been verified for this entry, and a family outing should be matched to actual climbing comfort.
Check the descent before leaving
The older route description suggests several alternative ways down. Council's status page separately lists the East Ridge route as closed after a slip, so do not rely on that suggestion to complete an eastern circuit. Plan to retrace an available signed approach unless you have confirmed another route. The status page warns that short closures may be missing. Check current entrance signs, take water and a layer, and keep the return straightforward if weather or energy changes.
Read the official track description and notices immediately before travelling. The source-check date is not a live access or safety report.
