Choose the correct Totara
This Totara Campsite is on Milford Road south of Mirror Lakes, not a similarly named campground elsewhere in New Zealand. Check the region and official page when booking or sharing the destination. DOC identifies larger-vehicle suitability here, but discuss unusual dimensions before travel. Arrive with enough daylight to look at the entrance and available space before manoeuvring, especially if the vehicle is unfamiliar or the party is towing.
Make room for a forest evening
DOC describes camping sheltered by beech forest. Use that setting for a slower overnight rather than assuming every stay needs another sightseeing stop after dinner. Establish camp and sort the next morning's essentials first, then decide whether there is time and energy for an outing. Keep shared space clear and make sure the party knows the agreed meeting point if some people leave the pitch while others stay to prepare food.
Prepare beyond vehicle size
A suitable parking space does not supply the rest of an overnight setup. Bring independent lighting, cooking equipment and drinking water, with a method for treating any replenishment. Keep wet gear away from sleeping clothes and bedding. Review the next day's road information before packing, rather than building the morning around an assumption that yesterday's conditions will continue. Allow time for a careful site check after chairs, awnings or tents have been put away.
Check the official campsite information for current restrictions, facilities and booking arrangements.
