Deer Flat is a small Eglinton River camping area with an explicit recurring-flood warning. That is the first comparison point, not a footnote: choose it only with a plan to recheck conditions and change the overnight stop if necessary.
Put the flood warning first
DOC reports repeated flooding that may restrict access to some sites and affect facilities. The warning remains on the checked page even when there is no separate alert banner.
Contact DOC about current conditions before committing to the approach during unsettled weather. Keep another authorised overnight option in the itinerary. Avoid interpreting a booking receipt, a dry-looking photograph or another traveller's older review as a current ground assessment.
Book a basic riverside stay
There are 15 non-powered sites, with reservations required. DOC lists tents, campervans and caravans, and an adult nightly rate of NZ$18.
Keep the booking total separate from the assumption that a particular spot will be usable. If the party needs a certain pitch shape or proximity to facilities, ask about that need specifically. A small campground leaves less room to improvise when the available areas do not suit the vehicle or group.
Check the usable route to facilities
The gravel approach leaves Milford Road 62 km north of Te Anau. Non-flush toilets and stream water are listed; DOC describes the toilets as wheelchair accessible.
That wording does not establish the condition of the route from every pitch, especially after rain. Ask about the whole journey between vehicle, sleeping area and toilet. Bring drinking water and meals that work with your own equipment rather than assuming a shared kitchen. Our campsite selection guide can help structure those questions.
Keep permissions and activities separate
Dogs are prohibited. Fires are only allowed in designated fireplaces when no fire ban applies. Plan cooking so it does not depend on being allowed to light a campfire.
The river setting may shape the day's activities, but it should not dictate the overnight decision when conditions change. Check the official Deer Flat listing and Milford Road advice before departure, leaving time to choose a different stop without rushing.

Common questions
Does a confirmed booking mean the ground is unaffected by flooding?
No. DOC warns of repeated flooding and possible restrictions to sites and facilities. Confirm current conditions before travelling and follow onsite instructions.
Is every pitch wheelchair accessible?
That has not been established. DOC specifically describes the toilets as accessible; ask about the route from your pitch and any recent flood effects.
