Eglinton Valley camping with a gravel entrance unsuitable for larger vehicles.
Match the approach to the vehicle
Upper Eglinton is beside Milford Road, with a gravel access road that DOC says does not suit larger vehicles. Confirm dimensions and suitability before reserving, especially if the trip uses a hired campervan. Do not let the word 'campervan' in an access category override that qualification. Keep an alternative campground in mind and plan to reach the entrance in daylight so the decision is not made hurriedly at the end of a tiring day.
Keep the valley outing separate
DOC identifies valley views and nearby walking opportunities, including the Earl Mountain tracks. Select an actual route with current information rather than assuming the surrounding terrain offers a casual evening stroll. If the party is tired after the drive, a settled meal and a night at camp can be the entire plan. For those heading out, agree a return time and ensure somebody knows the intended route before leaving the camping area.
Arrive ready for a basic night
Book before visiting and carry everything needed for cooking and sleeping. Bring drinking water for arrival instead of depending on immediate access to a stream, and keep dry layers separate from wet outdoor equipment. Review the following day's road plan before bed, with enough flexibility for changed conditions. During pack-up, leave space to contain damp gear and check the pitch carefully before loading the last items into the vehicle.
