Keep a Te Anau camp for a conditional Milford Road day and a separate low-level Kepler walk, leaving room to swap the outings or omit Milford.

This is a suggested itinerary, not a booked package or a guarantee that roads, walks or overnight sites are available.

Day 1: Te Anau supplies and an early camp

Arrive in Te Anau, settle at the town campground and organise food, fuel and the next day's road information. Keep any afternoon walk near the lakefront and let the group recover from the journey here. Decide whether tomorrow's Milford outing remains sensible before adding a commercial activity. A forecast that does not suit the road is a reason to stay local, not to leave earlier and hope to beat the weather.

Overnight: Te Anau

Day 2: A conditional Milford Road day

Only set out when road information and the forecast support the complete return journey. Make Mirror Lakes a possible short stop, not one of a long compulsory list. Continue to Milford Sound only with enough margin for the outing and return, or use separately confirmed coach transport. Any cruise needs its own check-in arrangements. Return to the same Te Anau camp; do not attach an evening transfer to Queenstown to this day.

Overnight: Te Anau

Day 3: A low-level taste of the Kepler

Start at the Kepler Track car park and walk towards Dock Bay through the lakeside forest, choosing a same-way return. Continue towards Brod Bay only if conditions, daylight and everyone's energy support the additional walking. This is not the start of a Luxmore ascent. Return to Te Anau for a relaxed final evening. Swap this day with Milford when useful, but omit either outing if severe weather makes even low-level walking unsuitable.

Overnight: Te Anau

Book the base before adding transport

Reserve your Te Anau stay and confirm any coach or cruise directly, including cancellation arrangements. No departure time or seat availability is included. The walking day returns to the car and does not reserve Great Walk accommodation. The cover is Lake Te Anau context from Henry Creek, not the booked town campground or a Milford Road condition report.

Protect the return journey

Visit Fiordland identifies Milford Road as an alpine drive requiring care. Check NZTA's current information before travelling and do not treat a short roadside walk as evidence that the whole road is suitable. If Milford cannot be visited, retain the Te Anau stay and a suitable local outing. Do not compress the missed excursion into departure day.
