A complete lake-and-ridge Great Walk circuit, with winter alpine hazards and a dated Iris Burn Hut closure.
Think beyond a summit outing
The Kepler's full circuit combines lakeside forest with the exposed country above Luxmore and the descent towards Iris Burn. This record covers the complete loop, not a return visit to Luxmore Hut. Choose the crossing because everyone wants several consecutive walking days, and check how the party copes with both sustained climbing and the following day's descent under a loaded pack.
Build the nights around real availability
Iris Burn Hut is unavailable under the renovation notice checked for this record. Do not substitute a very long walking day simply to preserve an otherwise convenient booking. Reassess the entire overnight sequence and ask DOC about the intended dates. A repair programme's estimated finish should remain a planning uncertainty until the operator confirms accommodation arrangements that match your trip.
Keep summer and winter separate
The seasonal dates and grades are material distinctions. In winter, DOC describes unmarked snowy alpine travel and avalanche exposure, not the usual serviced Great Walk experience. This record therefore uses the highest official seasonal difficulty. If your experience is limited to summer trails, make that limitation part of the route decision instead of assuming a warm forecast removes the need for specialist judgement.
Protect time for decisions
Before setting out, agree what conditions would make the group wait or cancel and who will contact the person holding your intentions. Keep spare days visible in the wider travel calendar. A circular route can simplify vehicle logistics, but it does not make every overnight stage interchangeable. Review food, communications and clothing against the actual itinerary whenever a hut or weather constraint changes it.
Read the official track description and notices immediately before travelling. The source-check date is not a live access or safety report.
