Robin Hood Bay is a free basic campground for a tent-based coastal trip, not a campervan stop. That distinction is explicit on the DOC listing and should come before any decision based on price or photographs.
Treat the vehicle restriction as decisive
DOC lists car access and says the campsite is not accessible for campervans. Do not interpret a compact rental van or a self-containment certificate as an exception. Caravan suitability is not verified either.
For a car-and-tent trip, check rental conditions and the current road advice. The approach beyond Whites Bay is winding and gravel. A mapping application choosing that route does not assess its suitability for your equipment or confidence.
Keep a backup for first-come camping
There is no nightly camping charge and no reservation system for the ten listed tent sites. Arriving at the bay does not guarantee a suitable space, particularly if your tent or group needs more room than a small pitch.
Choose another authorised overnight option before departure. If the campsite is full, do not extend the camping area onto the beach, roadside or nearby land simply because the designated campsite is free.
Bring drinking water and complete camp equipment
Non-flush toilets and stream water are the confirmed basic facilities. Bring drinking water and suitable treatment equipment rather than expecting a drinking-water tap or guaranteed stream flow.
Plan meals around the equipment you carry. No kitchen, shower or laundry has been verified. A simple first-night meal, readily available headlamp and organised wash kit are more useful here than assumptions based on a serviced campground elsewhere.
Plan a low-impact coastal stay
Fires are prohibited at all times. Dogs require a DOC permit obtained before the trip. Check the permit conditions rather than treating another camper's dog as proof that permission is unnecessary.
Assess beach and sea conditions independently of the campsite listing, and supervise children appropriately. Free DOC camping is still a designated campsite stay with its own rules; our freedom-camping guide explains why that is different from choosing an arbitrary roadside overnight spot.

Common questions
Can I take a campervan to Robin Hood Bay Campsite?
No. DOC explicitly states the campsite is not accessible for campervans. This directory includes it for tent campers arriving by car, not as a motorhome overnight option.
Does free camping mean I can reserve a pitch?
No. The campsite is first come first served and DOC lists only 10 tent sites. Have another authorised overnight option if no suitable space is available.
Is drinking water supplied?
DOC lists stream water rather than a treated tap supply. Bring drinking water and suitable treatment equipment; the listing does not guarantee stream flow or safe untreated water.
