Brett Road is a distinct campground on Lake Rerewhakaaitu, not another entrance to the Ash Pit Road camping area. Start your plan with the exact reservation name.

Choose Brett Road deliberately

The approach follows Brett Road into Awaatua Bay. Use the official campground directions and share a clear meeting point with companions.

If comparing the two lake campgrounds, focus on the booking category, entrance and available space for your party. Do not infer identical views, pitches or facilities from a shared lake name. Keep both confirmation and directions available offline rather than relying on a screenshot of a broad map.

Reserve the correct party size

The checked adult non-powered rate is NZ$15 nightly. DOC limits stays to seven nights, with six people and two vehicles including boats per booking. Larger groups need additional reservations.

Count equipment as well as people when planning the setup. Check whether your tent, shelter and vehicle arrangement can work within the booked space. Agree on a compact shared cooking arrangement rather than arriving with duplicated bulky items.

Make water the packing priority

DOC's active alert says both Brett Road and Ash Pit Road have no running water. It was last reviewed on 24 April 2026. Do not treat the lake as a substitute drinking supply.

Calculate water for the whole group and keep a reserve for an unexpected change in the itinerary. Label drinking-water containers clearly. Select meals and washing arrangements that remain practical when every litre has to arrive with you; a lakeside location does not remove that preparation.

Pitch safely and keep activities separate

The facilities include non-flush toilets and a cooking shelter. DOC says not to camp under mature trees. Inspect the place you will sleep before unloading and follow marked exclusions even when another spot appears more convenient.

Fishing and kayaking are listed activities, but licences, weather and ability need separate checks. Camping does not provide permission to enter private Crater Road or Mount Tarawera. Carry a shore-based alternative and remember reception can be intermittent. Our packing list helps organise equipment without assuming unconfirmed amenities.

Common questions

Can I use an Ash Pit Road booking at Brett Road?

Do not assume reservations transfer. These are separate sites; confirm any change through DOC before travelling.

Can I fill drinking-water containers onsite?

Do not rely on it. DOC's current alert reports no running water, and the main page says to bring your own water.

Can I camp under the lakeside trees?

DOC explicitly says not to camp beneath mature trees. Follow onsite safety signs when selecting a pitch.
