Spend two days around Rotorua before moving once to Taupo, pairing Okere Falls with a separate Huka Falls outing rather than an alpine crossing.

This is a suggested itinerary, not a booked package or a guarantee that roads, walks or overnight sites are available.

Day 1: Settle into Rotorua

Start with a town-based camp in Rotorua, then make a modest lakefront outing after unpacking. Put any separately booked cultural or geothermal visit on this day only if arrival leaves a comfortable margin; no attraction admission is included here. Buy walking lunches and check tomorrow's conditions. An early night makes more sense than driving north to Okere Falls immediately, especially if this is also your vehicle-collection day.

Overnight: Rotorua

Day 2: Okere Falls and a return to Rotorua

Make Okere Falls the main outing from Rotorua, using the Trout Pool Road access off SH33. Follow the signed walking track and viewing platforms rather than approaching the powerful water. Choose a short return from a lookout if the group wants less walking, then eat your packed lunch before heading back. Keep the same Rotorua pitch tonight and use the afternoon for drying gear and preparing for tomorrow's move.

Overnight: Rotorua

Day 3: Move south to Taupo without a detour list

Pack in daylight and travel from Rotorua to Taupo, leaving the afternoon for checking in and a short town-lakeshore stroll. Resist turning every roadside attraction into a scheduled stop; this is the day that absorbs laundry, shopping or an unexpectedly slow departure. Review the Huka Falls walking choices once settled. In poor driving conditions, discuss changing the overnight booking instead of assuming that a timetable in an itinerary must be followed.

Overnight: Taupo

Day 4: Huka Falls with an optional river-track section

Visit Huka Falls, then consider a short out-and-back on the Waikato River Track from the falls car park. Turn around while everyone is comfortable and watch for cyclists on this shared route. Do not confuse it with the separate Rotary Ride from Spa Park or assume either option is a short loop. Return to Taupo for a late lunch, keeping the remaining afternoon free rather than adding Tongariro travel.

Overnight: Taupo

Coordinate two camps, not four

Reserve the Rotorua and Taupo stays as separate bookings and confirm the actual pitch fits your vehicle or tent. The last Taupo night is a suggested buffer, not a required purchase. Attractions and transport need their own confirmation; neither accommodation nor this route secures an activity slot.

Keep the waterfalls on shore

DOC warns of dangerous currents at Okere and deep, fast water in the Waikato. Stay on the viewing routes. Swap a wet walking day for time in town, or shorten the river outing, without replacing it with a high-country walk. This four-day plan deliberately does not depend on Tongariro weather or transport.
