A very short return through kamahi forest to the historic hydroelectric station near Dawson Falls, distinct from the waterfall walk.

Choose the power-station track

This entry is for the historic hydroelectric station near Dawson Falls Visitor Centre, not the route to the waterfall. DOC describes the signed entrance a short way down Manaia Road from the visitor centre. Identify that sign before leaving the roadside. The hundred-metre return refers to the track itself; walking from a parking place is additional. DOC allows twenty minutes return, leaving room to consider the interpretation rather than simply reaching the building.

Look from the intended viewing points

The approach passes through kamahi forest above Kapuni Stream. At the station, DOC describes looking through the windows at the generator and reading the interpretation sign. Treat that as the visitor experience, not permission to enter operational equipment areas. This profile does not guarantee that machinery will be running when you arrive. Return along the same path, keeping everyone together around the small water race rather than wandering away to investigate it.

Include the roadside in your plan

Passing vehicles at the entrance are a specific DOC warning. Organise children and belongings before moving along or across the road, and do not let the very short track distance distract from that approach. The official wheelchair-accessible classification should be checked against individual needs and present conditions. Arrange your own transport; DOC lists no public transport for this destination. Leave dogs behind and recheck notices before making a dedicated trip to the road end.

Read the official track description and notices immediately before travelling. The source-check date is not a live access or safety report.
