Combine manageable Coastal Walkway sections with one conditional North Egmont forest outing, retaining a town-based option for mountain weather.
This is a suggested itinerary, not a booked package or a guarantee that roads, walks or overnight sites are available.
Day 1: Fitzroy and a first Coastal Walkway section
Set up at Fitzroy Beach Holiday Park and choose a nearby Coastal Walkway out-and-back, making Te Rewa Rewa Bridge an option rather than a compulsory destination. Carry a layer for the return and stop while the walk still feels easy. Back at camp, compare tomorrow's mountain forecast with the coast. Keeping the same pitch means you can switch the next two days without moving the whole household again.
Overnight: New Plymouth
Day 2: A conditional North Egmont forest outing
If road access and weather allow, travel via Egmont Village to the North Egmont road end. Ask about current works and track conditions before considering Ngatoro Loop, which includes steep steps and an unbridged stream. A viewing-area visit may be enough; do not continue through rising water to complete a loop. Return to New Plymouth for the night, keeping the mountain as a day visit rather than changing camps.
Overnight: New Plymouth
Day 3: Waterfront art and a shorter town day
Explore the central waterfront section around the Wind Wand, choosing a different Coastal Walkway stretch from arrival day. Leave room for an indoor visit to Puke Ariki or the Len Lye Centre after checking their current opening and admission arrangements. If this is the better mountain-weather day, swap it with yesterday instead. Finish back at Fitzroy with an easy meal, avoiding a last-minute drive around the mountain merely to complete a circuit.
Overnight: New Plymouth
Book a coast-side base
Confirm the camping category at Fitzroy and plan the mountain day independently. The alternative New Plymouth park is a separate booking choice, not guaranteed overflow. The selected photograph is general camping illustration, not a Taranaki route view. Keep clothing and footwear accessible even on the town day so a forecast change does not require unpacking everything.
North Egmont is conditional
The DOC page checked on 26 September 2026 carried a visitor-centre construction and limited-parking notice. Recheck it before travelling; no completion date or parking space is promised. After heavy rain, omit Ngatoro's stream crossing. In severe weather use a town-based indoor day, not the coast or forest as an assumed safe substitute.
