Move down Taranaki's eastern side with a Stratford forest day and a Hawera gardens finish, rather than returning to New Plymouth every night.
This is a suggested itinerary, not a booked package or a guarantee that roads, walks or overnight sites are available.
Day 1: New Plymouth arrival and Pukekura Park
Begin in New Plymouth and settle into your confirmed accommodation before choosing a brief Pukekura Park visit. Leave the extent of the outing to the weather and the group's energy after arrival. Collect supplies for the next two days and check tomorrow's Stratford address while you still have time to ask questions. The linked campground is a comparison, not a reserved pitch. Keep dinner local rather than beginning a second drive around the mountain this evening.
Overnight: New Plymouth
Day 2: Move to Stratford and stay in town
Travel from New Plymouth to Stratford with the accommodation move as today's main task. Once unpacked, take a modest town outing and look for the glockenspiel without arranging the afternoon around an unchecked performance time. Review the Kamahi description together and distinguish its Mountain House entrance from other mountain road ends. Prepare walking food tonight, then leave the vehicle parked. Staying in Stratford now avoids combining tomorrow's forest visit with another change of overnight base.
Overnight: Stratford
Day 3: A conditional Kamahi forest morning
If road advice and the forecast support the outing, use Pembroke Road to reach the Kamahi Loop entrance near Stratford Mountain House. Follow the named circuit, allowing for steps and wet patches rather than treating a short walk as effortless. Keep warm layers with the group and return to the same vehicle. Spend the second night in Stratford. If the mountain approach or track is unsuitable, retain a town day instead of substituting a higher route.
Overnight: Stratford
Day 4: Continue south to Hawera
Pack after breakfast and continue to Hawera, keeping the move separate from a mountain excursion. Confirm your host's arrival process before leaving Stratford and plan a proper rest after checking in. Use the afternoon for finding your bearings rather than trying to fit a coastal drive around the day's remaining light. Put King Edward Park on tomorrow's list and keep the evening unhurried. A named town base still needs an actual booking suited to your tent, vehicle or room requirements.
Overnight: Hawera
Day 5: King Edward Park and a Hawera finish
Choose a relaxed visit to King Edward Park in Hawera, with lunch and packing given as much space as sightseeing. This is a town finish, not the start of a rushed loop back through the western coast. Decide whether you are departing before leaving accommodation, and shorten the outing if onward travel needs the afternoon. Another Hawera night is optional and must be arranged separately. Do not leave equipment at yesterday's pitch without confirming that extra stay.
Overnight: Hawera; optional final night
Follow an eastern progression
The regional tourism guide establishes New Plymouth, Stratford and Hawera as successive bases. This itinerary omits its western coastal day and adds a second Stratford night for Kamahi. It is not a complete circuit of the maunga, and the finish does not include returning a vehicle to New Plymouth. Plan that separate transfer before booking.
Keep the forest visit conditional
DOC locates Kamahi beside Stratford Mountain House on Pembroke Road and describes a loop with steps and wet areas. Check current DOC notices, the mountain-road advice and forecast before leaving town. No summit route or higher track is included. A poor mountain forecast is a reason to omit the outing, not evidence that another access road will be suitable.
Confirm town accommodation independently
Arrange New Plymouth, two Stratford nights and Hawera before departure; the fifth night is optional. Existing park links retain their own research dates and do not establish vacancies or current facilities. Check NZTA and local councils for transfers. The licensed backpack cover is illustrative, not a photograph of this route, and the source check does not certify October conditions.
