Use the Mountain House entrance

The loop begins just above Ngati Ruanui Stratford Mountain House on Pembroke Road and returns below it. Park in the car park opposite the building; DOC identifies toilets across the road. This is not the same starting point as Dawson Falls, so choose the correct mountain access road before setting off from Stratford. Gather the group before crossing the road and read the entrance signs rather than following another party onto a different track.

A small circuit worth slowing down for

The path descends through mossy kamahi forest, crosses rocky streams on bridges and climbs back towards the road. Expect steps and damp patches after rain. Stop where the path is wide enough to look at ferns and branching trunks without blocking others. A short published time leaves room for a deliberate forest visit rather than a hurried tick on a driving itinerary. It does not establish a step-free route or remove the need for secure footwear.

Keep the mountain context in mind

The DOC area brochure explains that rapidly changing weather, snow and storm damage can affect these mountain walks. Check the road and local forecast even when only intending this small loop. Bring a layer into the forest instead of leaving all weather protection in the vehicle. The nearby road-end network contains much larger outings, so treat any tempting junction as a decision requiring its own plan. Agree that this visit ends back at the Mountain House area. Allow time for everyone to return comfortably before adding another stop, and do not assume hospitality facilities will be open simply because the walk starts near a lodge.

Read the official track description and notices immediately before travelling. The source-check date is not a live access or safety report.
