A small tent area after a mountain approach

Holly's campsite is the small area outside the hut, not a vehicle campground or a substitute booking for one of its bunks. DOC estimates only about three tents fit. Pack a compact setup and judge the trip as an advanced mountain walk with an overnight load. The approach from North Egmont involves several hours on foot, so arrival time matters well before reaching camp.

Check the date and the route together

Camping changes from first-come use to required online reservations on 1 October 2026. Confirm the correct camping product for your dates rather than booking a bunk or relying on the older arrangement. The Holly Hut Track has exposed sections, rockfall zones and unbridged streams that can become impassable. A reservation does not make those obstacles negotiable, and winter conditions require skills beyond ordinary summer camping.

Keep the tent stay independent of hut comforts

The source lists a toilet and rainwater supply near the hut, but heating, mattresses and solar lighting should not be treated as benefits included with a tent space. Confirm current water and camper arrangements with DOC, and bring your own cooking and sleeping equipment. Avoid making onward plans so tight that turning back or waiting for conditions would create pressure to continue across an unsuitable section.

Check the official campsite information for current restrictions, facilities and booking arrangements.
