Wangapeka-area tent camping where the Dart Ford determines access.
Make the ford the decision point
Access from Tapawera follows the Wangapeka River road and involves the Dart Ford. Look at the forecast for the whole stay rather than just the outward drive. Decide before departure what would cause you to turn around, so a paid booking does not become pressure to continue. Ask DOC about present access if conditions are uncertain; neither another driver's passage nor a distant gauge settles the decision for your vehicle.
A forest and history stop
DOC places Courthouse Flat in a historic goldfield landscape. Make exploration a deliberate activity after camp is established, with a chosen route and a return time. Avoid building a schedule that depends on reaching a particular attraction before dark. A slower overnight can leave more flexibility for reading local interpretation, taking photographs and simply spending time outside, without turning nearby backcountry opportunities into compulsory additions to the visit.
Book a genuinely prepared night
This is bookable tent camping rather than a vehicle touring stop. Pack for cooking, sleeping and managing wet equipment without relying on an equipped communal building. Store tomorrow's breakfast where it can be reached without dismantling the whole tent. Keep spare water and food available for a changed departure plan. Before going to sleep, review the next day's weather together and make sure somebody outside the party knows your expected return.
