Railway-history camping at Kawatiri Junction with unresolved booking instructions.
Use the junction deliberately
Kawatiri occupies the old railway-station site where SH63 meets SH6. That makes it a possible pause in a driving itinerary, but plan the arrival instead of leaving the decision until you are tired. Identify the signed campground entrance before manoeuvring a long vehicle. Separate the tasks of parking, selecting a camping position and exploring, so a brief stop does not become an improvised overnight in the wrong area.
Make room for the rail story
DOC describes a bridge, tunnel and station remains to explore. Save a torch and walking shoes somewhere accessible rather than beneath the camping load. Choose how much time to spend looking around after you have checked the local signs and the conditions. For families, a short, focused outing can be more satisfying than trying to combine several stops; give everyone a clear meeting point before splitting into smaller groups.
Resolve payment before leaving
The booking instructions need direct confirmation because DOC's current sources disagree. Keep the answer with your travel notes, and ask what payment method and proof of payment you should carry. Once that is settled, organise a simple overnight that does not depend on powered equipment. Bring your own cooking setup and a drinking-water reserve. Leave the next morning's route flexible enough to pack properly rather than rushing back into the driving day.
