A self-contained forest circuit from Western Gateway Park, passing the Whatonga sculpture without committing to the longer Manawatu Gorge traverse.
Use Western Gateway Park
Start at Western Gateway Park on Napier Road and follow the Tawa Loop signs under the highway bridge. This is the western circuit, not the one-way Manawatu Gorge Track already covered separately. Check the gate notice when parking and agree when the group needs to return. DOC lists different summer and winter opening hours, so avoid relying on a remembered closing time. Keep the complete loop and any picnic comfortably inside the available window.
Stay with the loop at Whatonga
The route passes through podocarp and broadleaf forest with nikau palms, viewpoints and places to pause. The Whatonga sculpture marks the middle of the loop. At the junction, continue around the signed circuit rather than taking the longer gorge traverse by mistake. The official grade spans easy to intermediate; use that qualification when deciding whether it suits the group. Allow extra time for looking at the sculpture and for any slower walking on the return half.
Read the forest notices
DOC identifies wasp activity and ongaonga as hazards, and pest control takes place in the reserve. Read entrance signs, avoid touching unfamiliar plants and leave control equipment alone. Bring water, food and clothing for changing weather even though the route returns to the same car park. Dogs cannot accompany this outing. Before leaving, confirm the current route notice and weather, and make sure everyone understands that the day's destination is the loop rather than the far end of the gorge.
Read the official track description and notices immediately before travelling. The source-check date is not a live access or safety report.
