An end-to-end forest walk high above the gorge, using current western access and the main eastern track rather than the closed Ballance loop section.

Use the current entrances

Western access is from Western Gateway Park on Napier Road via the Tawa Loop signs. Eastern access is from Ballance Gorge Road across Ballance Bridge. The main traverse is not a loop, so arrange a vehicle transfer or confirmed pickup. The checked alert closes a southern part of Ballance Loop but retains access by the main track. Do not follow an older circuit map into the removed-bridge section to reach your intended start.

Expect climbing above the gorge

The route rises from either end and traverses forest high above the river, with viewpoints along the way. It is not a level riverside path. Reserve energy for the final descent and keep the party close around slippery sections and bluffs. The reserve guidance warns of landslides, stinging nettle and wasps, and notes ongoing pest control. Read entrance notices rather than assuming a familiar walk will have the same conditions as a previous visit.

Plan the whole transfer

Match the walking direction to your pickup and the car-park gate hours, leaving room for stops and a slower member of the group. Put essential clothing and food in the packs that will travel with walkers, not in the vehicle waiting at the far end. Check who has each car key before separating the drivers. If the through-walk does not suit the group's energy, select a documented short loop with its own access information before departure. Do not turn the full traverse into an improvised return walk late in the day, and do not use the old gorge road as an assumed shortcut.

Read the official track description and notices immediately before travelling. The source-check date is not a live access or safety report.
