A compact forest loop from the Puketi recreation area, with named plants, boardwalks and a mature-kauri viewing platform.
Use the recreation-area start
The Nature Trail begins beside the information shelter near Puketi Forest Hut. Approach the recreation area using the DOC directions via Pungaere Road, allowing for gravel sections. Route and forest pages give different approach distances, so use current signs rather than treating either set of kilometre figures as turn-by-turn navigation. Clear valuables from view before leaving the vehicle. Check the entrance board for anything that changes the short loop described here.
Make time for the forest
The circuit includes boardwalks, labelled plants and a platform beside mature kauri. The lower section passes large kahikatea. This makes a rewarding slow walk: choose a few plant labels to investigate rather than trying to cover more ground elsewhere in the forest. An evening visit can offer glowworm sightings near the first boardwalk, but these are not guaranteed. Carry a working torch for each walker if darkness could arrive before you finish, and check the return path in daylight.
Keep the outing contained
DOC notes permanent closures elsewhere in Puketi and Omahuta to protect kauri, as well as a prohibition on dogs. Do not turn the Nature Trail into an exploratory forest crossing based on an old map. Follow cleaning instructions at the entrance and stay on the permitted surfaces. Plan a separate visit for longer forest routes after checking their own access information. Bring a layer, water and suitable footwear even for this compact outing. The useful choice here is how long to spend observing the forest, not how many extra junctions can be added before returning to the car.
