A forest stay with road access
Puketi suits a trip that gives the forest a full morning rather than squeezing in a roadside stop. The campground sits on its eastern edge, reached from Pungaere Road near Waipapa with a gravel approach. DOC permits vehicles beside pitches. Arrive with enough daylight to choose your space and organise the next day's walk before settling into camp.
Keep the hut and campsite separate
The nearby Puketi Forest Hut is a separate accommodation choice, not a communal lounge for campers. Keep tents outside the excluded hut and cabin frontage and bring everything needed for meals. Cold showers and basic toilets make this more practical than an unsupported clearing, but neither implies hot water or an equipped kitchen. Carry a container so treating drinking water is part of the evening routine.
Book and check the forest routes
Book before leaving reliable reception: the page's cash-payment wording does not override its warning about unbooked arrivals. Choose walks from current DOC route information rather than assuming every line on an old forest map remains accessible. Clean soil from boots and camping equipment before arrival. A short forest outing and an unhurried night may be a better match than building the stay around several unverified tracks.
Check the official campsite information for current restrictions, facilities and booking arrangements.
