Move north through Whangarei and Paihia to Kerikeri, leaving space for Puketi and a land-based Bay of Islands day without a Cape Reinga dash.

This is a suggested itinerary, not a booked package or a guarantee that roads, walks or overnight sites are available.

Day 1: Whangarei and the Town Basin

Start with Whangarei's Town Basin as a small arrival outing after checking into your chosen base. Leave larger coastal diversions out of the first afternoon and use the time to organise food, wet-weather clothing and tomorrow's road checks. The linked holiday park is a comparison point, not a promise of a vacant site. Finish the day before fatigue turns a simple local drive into a late search for somewhere to sleep.

Overnight: Whangarei

Day 2: North to a Paihia base

Travel from Whangarei towards Paihia after checking the day's highway information. Treat the move as a chance to stop properly for food rather than filling every break with an attraction. Arrive at the accommodation you have confirmed and unpack for two nights. Compare its address with Paihia town before planning an evening outing. Keep tomorrow free of compulsory boat departures so a delayed arrival does not force an early start or hurried waterfront transfer.

Overnight: Paihia area

Day 3: A land-based Bay of Islands day

Spend a full day around Paihia rather than repacking camp. Choose a modest town and waterfront outing, returning for lunch or a rest when that suits the group. Boat travel can be researched separately, but this plan does not depend on an island landing or a Russell ferry connection. Use the afternoon to check the Kerikeri accommodation and the Puketi approach. Keeping the evening quiet gives the next move some room if the weather deteriorates.

Overnight: Paihia area

Day 4: Move to Kerikeri and prepare for the forest

Move from Paihia to Kerikeri with the forest visit saved for tomorrow. Arrange a place to stay before driving, then make supplies and an early meal your priorities. Review DOC's Puketi directions against your vehicle agreement, because the approach includes unsealed roads. Keep an alternative local day ready if access is unsuitable. This pause is intentional: there is no need to combine a new camp, unfamiliar rural roads and an evening forest walk.

Overnight: Kerikeri

Day 5: Puketi as a daylight forest visit

Make a daylight trip to Puketi Nature Trail, using DOC's signed recreation-area start rather than navigating to an arbitrary forest pin. Follow current forest hygiene instructions and keep to the formed loop. Pause at the interpretation and viewing areas without extending into another track. Carry food and layers even for this modest outing, then return to Kerikeri. Leave an after-dark glowworm visit out of the plan so the return drive stays straightforward.

Overnight: Kerikeri

Day 6: Kerikeri buffer and onward planning

Use this day for Puketi if yesterday was unsuitable, or keep it as an unhurried Kerikeri finish. Do not append Cape Reinga just because you have reached the northern end of this itinerary. Check the full onward drive and organise any vehicle return before selecting a final local stop. If departing today, pack first and keep the outing brief. Staying another night requires its own confirmation, even when you have already been at the same base.

Overnight: Kerikeri; optional final night

Keep road and boat plans separate

Northland's RTO connects Whangarei, Paihia and Kerikeri in its regional touring guidance. This itinerary uses only the eastern portion and adds overnight breathing room. No ferry, cruise or island campsite is required. Check highways with NZTA and local approaches with the relevant council; DOC explicitly notes unsealed access roads at Puketi.

Confirm the three bases

Choose Whangarei, Paihia-area and Kerikeri accommodation before travel, checking the exact address and booking category. Linked park articles do not certify current facilities or availability. A forest road end is not a substitute for a confirmed overnight place, and the Puketi walk is not an accommodation recommendation.

Leave the last day movable

Swap the Puketi outing and Kerikeri day if track or road conditions warrant it. If the forest cannot be visited, omit it rather than choosing a remote alternative without research. Keep the finish in Kerikeri and plan a separate return journey; this six-day outline does not include the drive back to Auckland.
