Plan for a future full journey

The Milford Track follows the Clinton and Arthur valleys across McKinnon Pass. Its normal complete itinerary is four days in one direction, not a collection of independent hut walks. The published distance describes that normal journey. It must not be read as an invitation to attempt the crossing while the dated bridge restrictions in this record interrupt the route.

Treat the closure as decisive

At the research date, bridge replacement blocks the normal passage near Boatshed and access to the Sutherland Falls side track. An expected works completion date is provisional. Wait for DOC to confirm the arrangements relevant to your departure before committing to a through itinerary. A booking confirmation, old trip report or lack of snow at the start cannot override a closure.

Coordinate the complete booking

In the Great Walks season the normal walk uses three reserved huts and boat transport; camping is not permitted. Check the entire sequence together, including the final collection, before confirming surrounding travel. Record who holds each reservation and how the party will respond to a cancelled departure. Keep enough flexibility in the wider holiday to choose another activity rather than force a replacement crossing.

Understand the winter distinction

The off-season route requires alpine, navigation and river judgement beyond the summer walking grade, which is why this year-round record uses the expert filter. Flooding and avalanche terrain can affect much more than the pass itself. Seek current DOC advice for any winter proposal and be willing to abandon it. Shortening the packing list does not shorten the consequences of being delayed.

Read the official track description and notices immediately before travelling. The source-check date is not a live access or safety report.
