A forest-to-ridge circuit in the Maungaharuru area, with exposed limestone viewpoints and a road section to complete the return.

Allow for the road approach

Reach the Pohokura Road entrance via Tutira and Matahorua Road. The final approach is narrow, winding and unsealed, so allow time beyond the walking estimate. The small car park can fill; do not obstruct the road or farm entrances. Make any decision to wait or park elsewhere before unloading a group beside traffic. The loop eventually uses a road return, so save the entry location and identify it clearly on your map.

Choose conditions for the ridge

The track climbs through forest before emerging onto the range, where the left branch leads towards Bell Rock. The other side of the circuit uses a four-wheel-drive track back to Pohokura Road. The exposed rock is a viewpoint, not a place to approach an edge for a photograph. Keep children close and choose a turnaround if wind or footing makes the ridge uncomfortable. A three-hour estimate does not account for waiting out unsuitable weather.

Follow the walking markers

Boundary Stream's conservation work uses an extensive pest-control network. Follow the orange walking markers rather than the differently coloured trap-line markers, and leave equipment untouched. The area also has hidden limestone holes, stinging nettle and wasps; stay on the intended route. Pack for changes between sheltered forest and open ground, including warm and waterproof layers. Plan a break somewhere with secure footing rather than making the exposed rock the only lunch stop. Keep enough daylight for the road section, move carefully around vehicles, and recheck that the whole party has returned before driving away. No adjacent reserve walk is included in this circuit's figures.

Read the official track description and notices immediately before travelling. The source-check date is not a live access or safety report.
