- Free camping just inside the Lake Tutira park gateway, separate from the council campground.
- Do not confuse the DOC entrance campground with the council site approximately 950 m farther in, which has separate fees and seasonal closure.
- Toxic algal blooms can affect the lake; obey water-entry warnings. No motorboats, dogs or fires.
- Camping styles
- tent, campervan, caravan
- Fees
- Non-powered camping: Free DOC campground, not the separate paid council campground farther into the park.
- Water
- DOC lists untreated tap water. Lake algal warnings are separate; do not assume lake water is usable.

Stop at the correct campground
The DOC campground is just inside the Lake Tutira Regional Park gateway, reached from State Highway 2 north of Bay View. A different council campground lies farther along the access road. Check signs before unpacking so the free DOC listing is not mistaken for permission to occupy the paid council site. The distinction also matters when reading seasonal closures associated with the regional park.
Choose a lakeside stay without assuming lake access
The southern lake setting is the main attraction, but an attractive view is not evidence that the water is suitable for entering. DOC flags possible toxic algal blooms and prohibits motorboats. Plan a stay that works as a quiet lakeside overnight even if water activities are ruled out. Inspect the available pitch and follow current signs rather than treating an online description as a conditions report.
Keep the overnight self-contained in practice
This is basic, first-come camping, not a serviced holiday park. Bring cooking equipment and manage drinking water according to the untreated-tap warning. A picnic shelter does not establish an equipped kitchen, and no pitch is reserved in advance. Have another lawful stop available if the campground is full. Check any planned walk separately, allowing the next day's choice to reflect weather, access and the group's energy.
Check the official campsite information for current restrictions, facilities and booking arrangements.
