Use Reefton for preparations

Slab Hut Creek is reached off SH7 south of Reefton on a gravel access road. Complete any shopping and equipment checks before turning off, then leave time to inspect the pitch in daylight. Keep rain gear at the top of the load rather than buried beneath bedding. If the itinerary involves several vehicles, agree who carries shared cooking supplies so the first arrivals can establish camp without waiting for every bag.

Explore the mining setting carefully

DOC describes a former mining area beside a creek, with fossicking and forest outings nearby. Treat any activity beyond camp as a separate decision based on current information and the group's abilities. Do not assume that an interesting place on a map can be reached casually before dinner. A short exploration followed by a relaxed evening can suit a stopover better than a longer route that leaves little margin for changing conditions.

Build a wet-weather routine

An online camping reservation is required. Pack so that the tent, waterproofs and first meal can be reached without exposing the entire load. Keep sleeping bags and tomorrow's clothes in separate dry storage, and decide where wet footwear will go. Carry drinking water for arrival rather than making immediate collection the first job. Before the return drive, contain damp equipment and rubbish securely so a rainy pack-up does not leave small items scattered across the pitch.

Check the official campsite information for current restrictions, facilities and booking arrangements.
