Give Hokitika Gorge and Lake Matheson their own days, using a separate southbound transfer and no promise of glacier access or mountain reflections.
This is a suggested itinerary, not a booked package or a guarantee that roads, walks or overnight sites are available.
Day 1: Hokitika supplies, Lake Mahinapua camp
Begin in Hokitika, buy food for two nights and settle at Lake Mahinapua after confirming the campsite arrangements. Keep the afternoon around camp rather than heading immediately inland to the gorge. Prepare a dry bag of walking clothes and put tomorrow's lunch where it can be reached without unpacking the vehicle. If the forecast is severe, investigate confirmed roofed accommodation before committing to a lakeside tent night, not after conditions deteriorate.
Overnight: Lake Mahinapua, near Hokitika
Day 2: Hokitika Gorge with a shorter-viewpoint option
Make Hokitika Gorge the day's main outing and follow the signed access roads rather than treating it as an SH6 roadside stop. Start with the first viewing platform, then decide whether the bridges and longer loop suit the group. Stay away from the river edge and do not swim. Return towards Hokitika for supplies before the same camp. If rain or access prevents the visit, use the day to rest rather than pressing south early.
Overnight: Lake Mahinapua, near Hokitika
Day 3: A dedicated transfer to Fox Glacier
Pack camp and take the southbound SH6 transfer through Franz Josef to Fox Glacier as the main task. Add meal and rest stops, but do not attach a glacier walk or sunset appointment to the arrival. Check the onward road before leaving each service town and use legal stopping places. At Fox, settle into the holiday park and prepare for Lake Matheson tomorrow. This keeps the walking day independent of transfer delays.
Overnight: Fox Glacier
Day 4: Lake Matheson without a reflection deadline
Follow the Lake Matheson access from Fox Glacier and walk first towards Jetty Lookout. Choose the full lake circuit only if everyone wants the longer outing; otherwise return the same way. Let the forest be worthwhile even when clouds hide the mountains or wind removes reflections. Carry layers and leave time for a relaxed afternoon in Fox. There is no need to drive on towards Haast after the walk to complete this plan.
Overnight: Fox Glacier
Two bases and an interruption plan
Confirm the Mahinapua and Fox bookings independently. A Franz Josef stay can shorten the transfer only if access and availability are confirmed. Review NZTA's highway information and council notices for local approaches; no same-day detour or open road is promised. Glacier tours, valley access and flights are outside this itinerary's checked scope.
Shorter walks are choices, not storm clearance
The first Hokitika Gorge platform and Matheson's Jetty Lookout are useful lower-commitment turnarounds in suitable conditions. Neither overrides a severe-weather warning or closure. Avoid the gorge river, keep dry overnight clothing separate, and cancel walking if necessary. A weather delay can remove one destination; it should not compress two full days into one.
