Lewis Pass forest camping with walking routes beginning at the campsite.
Pause on the Lewis Pass route
Marble Hill lies beside SH7 east of Springs Junction. Decide whether it is a single driving break or a base for a walking day, then reserve enough time for that purpose. Check both the highway and your planned activity before leaving the previous stop. Keep the first evening uncomplicated if the arrival follows a long drive; setting up a secure, comfortable camp is a useful objective by itself.
Pick the right amount of walking
DOC identifies the Sluice Box Gorge and Lake Daniell Track as outings from here. Choose one according to the party's available time and preparation rather than combining names on a map into an assumed short loop. Take a day pack even when the tent is nearby, and agree a turnaround point before leaving. Consider an earlier start the next morning instead of squeezing a more ambitious walk into the remaining evening light.
Keep outside amenities separate
Book the campsite and prepare for a non-powered night. Any visit to commercial hot pools needs a separate check of access, opening arrangements and costs; do not make it the only washing or bad-weather plan. Pack food that works with your own stove, with a simple alternative if dinner is delayed. Keep drinking-water treatment organised and leave enough fuel and provisions for breakfast before you set off on the next part of the journey.
Check the official campsite information for current restrictions, facilities and booking arrangements.
