Camping among mature trees between streams, inland from Overtons Beach on Aotea.

A beach base with an inland pitch

Harataonga sits between streams beneath mature trees, with Overtons Beach a short walk away. Choose it when you want to leave the tent established while making separate beach and walking outings. It is not a beach-driving camp, so allow for carrying whatever you take to the shore. The farmland and bush around camp also make it a distinct stop from Aotea's harbour sites.

Match the load to the access

The narrow gravel approach deserves planning if your vehicle is large or unfamiliar. Booking is for the party rather than an individually designated pitch, so arrive prepared to adapt your layout to the space available. Look at ground conditions before unpacking, keeping stream margins and any restrictions in mind. A mature-tree setting does not establish that every patch is suitable in strong wind or heavy rain.

Bring the working parts of camp

Cold showers, untreated taps and a shelter leave you responsible for cooking gear, drinking-water preparation and waste removal. Prepare those routines before setting off on a longer walk. Keep away from nesting birds and do not use beach access as permission to drive beyond the campground. Confirm current track conditions for any coastal outing rather than assuming a nearby walkway will always be available throughout.

Check the official campsite information for current restrictions, facilities and booking arrangements.
