Pohutukawa-shaded camping at Port FitzRoy on Aotea / Great Barrier Island.
Base the stay around Port FitzRoy
Akapoua is the harbour-side choice among Aotea's DOC camps, with a shingle shore and pohutukawa setting near Port FitzRoy. It makes sense for a stay focused on this end of the island rather than repeated cross-island drives. Work out how you will get from your ferry or flight to camp; the campground booking does not include those connections.
Check vehicle size before bringing everything
DOC lists tents, campervans and caravans, but the access roads are narrow and gravel. Treat that combination as a reason to check the practical journey with your vehicle provider, not as a promise that every large rig will suit. Reservations cover people rather than designated pitches. Leave room for others when choosing a setup and avoid depending on a particular tree-shaded spot.
Separate nearby services from camp facilities
A wharf, shop and fuel depot are described nearby; they are not proof of round-the-clock supplies at the campsite. Bring cooking equipment, treat tap water and expect cold showers. Arrange waste disposal as part of the island trip because camp has no rubbish collection. Pick walks using current track information, and leave enough daylight to return and prepare dinner without needing an unverified service.
