Basic riverside tent camping reached along the Cobb Reservoir road.
Allow for the reservoir road
The approach follows Cobb Dam Road from Upper Takaka to the head of the reservoir. Treat this as a destination drive, not a quick diversion between booked activities. Check the latest road advice and forecast before leaving the main route, including the weather expected for your return. A first-come campsite is best approached with another overnight option already considered, especially when the journey itself requires careful planning.
River time without a timetable
The campsite sits beside the Cobb River. An unhurried stay can work well for travellers who want time outside without committing to a long walking itinerary. Decide what you want from the visit before loading specialist equipment: an evening by the tent calls for different preparation from a full day away. Keep meals and sleeping equipment protected from damp, and take insect protection that you are comfortable using around camp.
Self-contained tent arrangements
Camping is free and unreserved, but that does not remove the need to arrive prepared. Carry enough food for a delayed departure and keep your drinking-water plan independent of easy access to the riverbank. Organise rubbish so it can leave with you even after a wet night. Before settling in, read local notices and agree where everyone will meet if the group separates. Leave a responsible contact with your intended return arrangements.
Check the official campsite information for current restrictions, facilities and booking arrangements.
