Brown Campsite is a useful first night for a Heaphy Track itinerary beginning at the Golden Bay end. Although often searched for as Brown Hut camping, it is a separate tent stay with its own booking and equipment requirements.

Pack for the campsite, not the hut

DOC places the campsite beside Brown River, around five minutes' walk from the track start. That short walk can make access straightforward, but it does not turn the site into a vehicle camping area.

Organise your kit so everything needed overnight can be carried together. Think through the return trip to your transport before leaving valuables or food behind, especially if the overnight stay precedes several days on the track.

Verify the Great Walk reservation

Eligible New Zealand adults pay NZ$19 nightly. International adults pay NZ$28 in October-April and NZ$19 in May-September. Proof of eligibility is required for the New Zealand rate; the DOC Campsite Pass does not cover this site.

The campsite page currently has a booking-link label naming Abel Tasman despite describing the Heaphy Track. Check the reservation itself carefully. Do not pay for a different track because the link wording appears familiar.

Bring independent cooking and water arrangements

The campsite has toilets, sinks and untreated tap water. Boil the water before use. Campers cannot use the hut's facilities, so bring shelter, sleeping gear, lighting and your own cooking setup.

An evening meal that uses little preparation space can simplify the first night. Keep a drinking-water reserve ready while unpacking, and do not depend on finding spare hut equipment or indoor space if the weather changes.

Treat the onward walk as another decision

An overnight booking establishes somewhere to camp; it does not establish that the rest of your route is suitable. Review track notices, weather and the capabilities of your group before beginning the next stage.

Save transport arrangements and confirmations offline, and leave a clear itinerary with someone outside the party. No dogs are allowed. Our Great Walk booking guide helps distinguish accommodation reservations from the wider trip plan.

Common questions

Can I sleep in a campervan at Brown Campsite?

This listing is for the walk-in tent campsite. DOC lists foot and mountain-bike access, not campervan or caravan pitches. Do not treat the track car park as authorised overnight vehicle camping.

Does a campsite booking include Brown Hut?

No. DOC explicitly says campers cannot use hut facilities. Bring a complete tent-camping setup, including cooking equipment.

Why does the DOC booking label mention Abel Tasman?

The checked page has an inconsistent booking-link label. Brown Campsite is on the Heaphy Track; verify the track, campsite and dates in the official booking system before payment.
