A short climb from the Franz Josef Glacier road-end area to a rock viewpoint, with interpretation about the changing glacier valley.
Start at the glacier road end
Reach the car park at the end of Glacier Access Road from Franz Josef, then use the signs for Sentinel Rock. The walking distance belongs to the rock viewpoint return, not an approach all the way from the township. DOC lists a twenty-minute estimate without a direction label in its time panel. Keep parking, preparation and reading stops outside that estimate when deciding how much of your day to allow.
Use the viewpoint to understand change
The track climbs steadily over a bush-covered rock shaped by glacial ice. At the viewpoint, interpretation panels use photographs to explain retreat and the changing valley. Treat those panels as the focus rather than expecting a particular close view of ice: this entry does not promise visibility or a fixed glacier position. Stay on the formed walking route. Reaching a valley viewpoint is not permission to continue towards, or onto, the glacier.
Keep the short visit self-contained
Check the current parking instructions on arrival; the DOC page identifies paid parking at Franz Josef Glacier. Do not assume a short walking time makes the whole stop free. Carry a weatherproof layer and allow enough time to descend without rushing to another booking. Leave dogs behind, check the route's notices and follow any local barriers. Extra valley walks need their own access and timing checks rather than being silently included in this return.
Read the official track description and notices immediately before travelling. The source-check date is not a live access or safety report.
