Description
From Omaha Valley Road:
Tramp up to the summit of Mt Tamahunga through regenerating native forest. This track joins the Te Araroa - The Long Pathway just before the summit.
Time: to the summit – 1 hr 30 min one way; to Rodney Road – 3 hr 30 min one way; to the top of Matakana Valley Road – 2hr 30 one way.Distance: to the summit – 2.5 km one way; to Rodney Road – 6.5 km one way; to Matakana Valley Road – 5.2 km one way
The walkway initially climbs over farm paddocks to the bush line (please follow markers and use stiles to cross fences). Once in the bush, follow orange markers up the ridge to the summit and a helicopter pad. Views from the summit are restricted by forest, but several gaps in the track do provide views of the area.
From here you can retrace your steps or continue northwards to the Rodney Road exit. On leaving the bush, follow white markers up and down a steep route following a farm fence line until you exit onto a farm track, which joins with the end of Rodney Road. Enjoy magnificent views up and down the coast. You can also turn west, on reaching the summit ridge / Te Araroa track and pass the Metrological Service Radar Station, then descend gradually to the Matakana Valley Road exit, on the norther side of the Matakana hill. Part of this track follows a buried / boxed in power cable.
You can also continue the walk from Rodney Road, 3 km across private farmland to the end of Bathgate Rd, Pakiri. Follow the white markers, please stick to the route and use the stiles to cross fences.
Getting there
The carpark and sign-posted track entrance is 1 km down Omaha Valley Road (off Leigh Rd), Matakana (just before #109), 72.5 km from downtown Auckland.
Know before you go
Assess is via private farm land. Be aware that dogs are not allowed on this farm land, or the Mt Tamahunga walkway.
