A full township-and-peninsula outing using the clifftop walkway and the marked return through South Bay.
Make it a peninsula outing
The full walkway links Kaikoura's waterfront, Point Kean, the clifftop and South Bay before returning towards town. It offers a broader visit than driving straight to a lookout. DOC's fact panel mixes short sections with the complete route, so its smallest time and distance do not describe this outing. Reserve a substantial part of the day if you want the entire experience.
Stay with the marked return
From South Bay the described return uses the marked connection and Toms Track. Do not replace it with an assumed beach shortcut. At Whalers Bay, DOC advises returning up the formed descent track because the unmaintained shoreline passage can be obstructed by tides or seals. A line that appears walkable from above does not establish a continuous route around the coast.
Give the wildlife its space
DOC specifies a separation of at least twenty metres from seals. Allow that space without trying to squeeze between an animal and the sea, and keep the group together around the exposed cliff edges. Bring binoculars or use a camera's zoom rather than moving closer. Viewing wildlife should remain an observation from the walking route, not a reason to abandon it.
Allow time for looking
Set a pace that leaves room for interpretation panels, changing views and rests, rather than treating the published walking estimate as an appointment. Take clothing for coastal wind and carry drinks before leaving town. Discuss the full route with everyone at the start, especially if some expected only a short lookout visit, and choose a shorter plan openly if that better suits the group.
Read the official track description and notices immediately before travelling. The source-check date is not a live access or safety report.
