A short marked approach to Castlepoint Lighthouse and coastal lookouts, with serious wave and cliff hazards beyond the safe walking line.
Start at the reserve road end
Follow the Masterton Castlepoint Road to the coastal settlement and road-end car park. The reserve page identifies toilets at the road end and describes the beach as a shared area with vehicles and boat launching. Keep children together while moving from the vehicle to the walking route. The short walking estimate does not include the road journey, parking or a beach stop, so give this destination its own space in the day's itinerary.
Stay on the lighthouse route
The marked walk leads to the lighthouse and onward lookouts, with steps on the route beyond. Enjoy the view from secure positions without approaching cliff margins. DOC specifically warns against the reef beside the lagoon because waves are unpredictable and fatalities have occurred. A calm-looking interval is not a reason to leave the path. In strong wind, choose an earlier turnaround rather than making the highest viewpoint the condition for a successful visit.
Keep other attractions separate
Castle Rock, the lagoon and the beach form a wider reserve, but they are not all included in this short walk. DOC advises against climbing Castle Rock and prohibits removing fossils or camping within the reserve. Do not extend a lighthouse visit into an unscheduled scramble. Take a layer even for a brief stop, keep hands free on steps and pause before taking photographs rather than walking backwards for a wider frame. Watch for seals without approaching them or blocking their movement. Finish the marked outing first, then reconsider any further activity against the weather, available daylight and the energy of the whole group.
Read the official track description and notices immediately before travelling. The source-check date is not a live access or safety report.
