Head north to a Waikanae base for separate estuary and forest outings, leaving the Wairarapa crossing and island excursions outside the trip.

This is a suggested itinerary, not a booked package or a guarantee that roads, walks or overnight sites are available.

Day 1: Wellington arrival and a settled evening

Begin with a Wellington-area overnight that matches your vehicle or accommodation needs. Use the regional guide to compare locations, but confirm the actual address before planning any city outing. Keep arrival, groceries and rest as the day's priorities, especially after a ferry or flight. Review the next day's northward route and Waikanae booking before dinner. Do not assume waterfront parking is overnight accommodation, or that an arrival connection leaves enough energy for another drive this evening.

Overnight: Wellington area

Day 2: Move north to Waikanae and orientate

Travel north to Waikanae on the Kapiti Coast after checking the route and your host's arrival instructions. Once settled, identify the entrance you intend to use for tomorrow's estuary walk without making a full outing compulsory today. Choose a local meal and prepare a small walking pack. Compare the host's street address with your Kapiti route instead of relying on a familiar place name in a search result. This trip needs a confirmed local base for both walking days.

Overnight: Waikanae area

Day 3: Waikanae Estuary with a clear turnaround

Use the Waikanae Link Track for a deliberate out-and-back from your chosen entrance. Tell everyone where the vehicle is parked and turn around before the outing becomes longer than intended. DOC warns of soft sand and quicksand conditions near the water, so remain on the established route rather than exploring the river mouth. Observe the estuary without entering sensitive habitat. Return to the same Waikanae accommodation, leaving the forest walk for tomorrow instead of adding it automatically.

Overnight: Waikanae area

Day 4: Kohekohe forest and a Waikanae finish

Choose Kohekohe Walk in Hemi Matenga reserve as a separate forest outing, starting from the entrance agreed with your companions. The path links Tui Crescent and Kakariki Grove; plan to retrace it unless you have explicitly arranged the other end. Stay with the named walk rather than following a connection onto Parata or Te Au. Finish in Waikanae with the final night optional. Returning to Wellington for a departure is another journey, not an included timed connection.

Overnight: Waikanae area; optional final night

Choose a Kapiti address, not a matching name

DOC places Waikanae north of Wellington on the Kapiti Coast. This itinerary remains in the Wellington region and finishes there, without crossing to Wairarapa. Confirm a real local accommodation address before booking. No particular Waikanae campground has been re-audited; a regional directory is a starting point, not confirmation of a suitable local pitch.

Keep the two walks distinct

The Link Track is an estuary outing with several entrances and a soft-sand hazard beside the water. Kohekohe is a separate forest path between street entrances, with connections to more demanding routes. Neither day requires a river crossing, beach circuit or hill extension. Review current DOC notices and entrance signs; the checked date is not a report of today's surfaces or access.

Allow a separate return journey

Reserve a Wellington-area arrival night and two nights around Waikanae, adding the fourth only if needed. Keep ferry, flight and return-drive arrangements outside the walking allocation. No transport timetable, live vacancy or camping permission is supplied here. Check NZTA and relevant councils before moving bases. The backpack photograph is licensed illustration, not a view of either Kapiti walk.
