Take the correct branch from town

Begin at the end of Cowan Street in Franz Josef. The opening approach is shared with the Tatare Tunnels Walk before Callery continues through rainforest. Check the signs at that separation rather than assuming either branch reaches the same destination. The published distance is the return to the historic gorge bridge. It does not include exploring the tunnels, so plan that as a separate walk if it is also on your list.

Budget for the climb back

After the initial climb to a high terrace, the track narrows beside an old mining water race and later descends towards the river. Remember that the descent must be regained on the way home. Look at the remaining mining features from the track without disturbing them. At the bridge, use the gorge view as the endpoint; this profile does not establish any route beyond it or permission to enter the riverbed.

Prepare for wet forest footing

DOC recommends sturdy footwear and warns about slippery rocks after rain or frost. Pack warm and waterproof layers, drinking water, sun protection and insect repellent before leaving town. Ask the visitor centre about conditions rather than treating a village start as proof of an uncomplicated outing. Keep enough time for a slower return if footing deteriorates. Leave dogs behind, follow any barriers and reassess the weather before committing to the full walk.

Read the official track description and notices immediately before travelling. The source-check date is not a live access or safety report.
