Choose a crossing or a turnaround

The council's route begins at the car park below the gondola in Heathcote and finishes on Bridle Path Road in Lyttelton. Its time is one way, not an allowance for crossing the hills and walking back. Decide before leaving whether to complete that crossing or turn at Summit Road. A summit-only return is a different outing, so do not transfer the full route's distance to that shorter option.

Allow for a steep descent

The ascent passes memorial seats before reaching a stone shelter near the top. Beyond Summit Road, the walking line drops steeply towards Lyttelton. Take footwear with grip and keep enough energy for the downhill section rather than spending the whole allowance on the climb. This is a shared track: leave room for other users and stop clear of the walking line when looking at the harbour. Keep dogs on a leash.

Separate transport from track timing

Check current public transport arrangements if you intend to finish in Lyttelton; this profile does not promise a bus departure or gondola service. Save the start and finish locations so everyone understands the pickup plan. Carry water and weather protection, and check council notices before travel. The Crater Rim connections are separate routes requiring their own planning. Do not add one simply because it branches from the top of this crossing.

Read the official track description and notices immediately before travelling. The source-check date is not a live access or safety report.
