Plan around the diversion

This is not an unrestricted version of the old Aotea circuit. The checked DOC alert closes part of Kaiaraara Track and directs hut-to-hut travel onto South Fork Track. Confirm the intended stages with DOC before committing to accommodation and transport. The advertised two-to-three-day duration describes the overall trip category, not a newly verified timetable for the diversion. No single distance is supplied here because entrances and the affected section need to be considered together.

Separate island and walking logistics

Aotea lies beyond Auckland's mainland road network, with sea and air connections and separate transport to trail entrances. Arrange those connections alongside hut reservations rather than assuming an arrival on the island delivers you to the track. DOC describes approaches from Whangaparapara Road and Windy Canyon. Choose one documented itinerary and give that plan to your transport provider. Keep some flexibility around the final travel day so a slower walk does not force rushed decisions.

Prepare for a loaded-pack tramp

Expect stairs, steep climbs, wet sections and a mix of forest and open ridge terrain. South Fork involves streams that should not be crossed after heavy rain; a diversion is not automatically an all-weather route. Carry navigation, shelter, food and emergency communications appropriate to an overnight trip. Sort essential gear before leaving the mainland and avoid relying on a last-minute island purchase. Discuss what the group will do if the weather blocks a stage, including how to notify the person holding your intentions. Leave enough food and schedule flexibility to make waiting or retreating a real option.

Read the official track description and notices immediately before travelling. The source-check date is not a live access or safety report.
