Sleeping bags buying advice

Before you buy

Understand sleeping bag temperature ratings

Comfort is not limit

Read the published comfort and limit values separately. Do not treat an extreme or survival rating as a comfortable sleeping temperature.

Fit affects the night

Check body-length guidance, shoulder room, hood and zip side. Compare the same size when checking weight or price.

Include your mat

Your mat, shelter, clothing, moisture and individual cold sensitivity all influence the sleep system. A bag rating is not a weather guarantee.

From first use to the next trip

Use, care & repair

01Try the complete system

Test the bag with your usual mat and clothing before a remote trip. Check the zip, hood and available space without compressing insulation.

02Keep insulation dry

Protect it from rain and air it when conditions allow. Follow the care label for washing and drying; down and synthetic products can have different instructions.

03Store without compression

Once completely dry, follow the manufacturer's storage guidance. Keep the transport sack separate from long-term storage where a larger storage bag is specified.

General sleeping bags guidance. The exact model's instructions take precedence.

Common buying questions

Good to know

Which temperature rating should I compare?

Start with the published comfort rating on a consistent test basis. Check whether the number in the product title is instead a limit rating and whether the size or version changes the specification.

Does a higher fill power automatically mean a warmer bag?

No. Fill quantity, construction, fit and the published temperature test also matter. Fill power alone is not a complete warmth comparison.

Can I use the same washing instructions for every sleeping bag?

No. Use the care label and the exact manufacturer's instructions. They take precedence over general washing advice.
