Follow the Geraldine approach
DOC's route uses Woodbury Road and Waihi Gorge Road northwest of Geraldine, with a gravel approach. Sort supplies before the final drive and keep arrival directions available without relying on a last-minute search. If towing or arriving in several vehicles, leave time to inspect the ground before anyone starts unpacking. Choose a meeting point within the signed camping area rather than assuming the whole group will find the same riverside spot.
Let the river warning guide the choice
The Waihi River and surrounding lowland forest define the setting. A picturesque position is not a reason to ignore the weather or local barriers. Check how the forecast may change overnight and decide what would make you leave or choose another campsite. For families, set clear boundaries before play begins, and keep supervision separate from cooking or tent setup so attention is not divided during the busiest part of arrival.
Keep the evening uncomplicated
Reserve before travel and prepare a non-powered overnight with your own cooking kit. Use a straightforward meal plan that leaves time to organise dry clothes, bedding and the next morning's equipment. Carry drinking water for arrival rather than making collection an urgent job. Before packing up, check around the eating area as well as the tent or vehicle, and allow enough time to depart calmly instead of fitting the campground into an already overfull driving day.
Check the official campsite information for current restrictions, facilities and booking arrangements.
