Walk-in camping above Twilight Beach on the western Te Paki coastline.

A walking overnight, not a beach drive

Twilight is for people carrying a complete camp along the western Te Paki coast. Coastal does not mean level: the approach includes beaches, climbs and ridges, so judge the day by walking effort rather than map distance alone. Pack a tent you can carry comfortably and leave enough time to establish camp before darkness. There is no vehicle-based fallback at the pitch.

Use the open western route

The checked alert explicitly keeps Twilight open while closing eastern sections towards Pandora, Kapowairua and Tapotupotu. Build an itinerary around the permitted western approach, not the full coastal circuit shown in older descriptions. DOC also maintains a precaution about feral dogs after earlier sightings. Travel with others, keep food contained and read the current notice again before committing to the walk.

Carry a self-sufficient camp

Self-registration is required even though bookings are not taken. A cooking shelter and toilet do not remove the need for your own stove, food, lighting and water-treatment arrangements. Organise these so another night would be manageable if conditions disrupt travel. The sea is not an automatically suitable swimming option, and the reserve's fire restrictions rule out a beach bonfire as an evening plan.

Check the official campsite information for current restrictions, facilities and booking arrangements.
