Arrange the entire island journey
Moawhitu is on D'Urville Island, with access options involving sea or air transport and an onward island journey. Agree exactly where a carrier will leave you, how luggage will move and how you will return. Do not treat a free campsite as a low-logistics trip. Put transport cancellation arrangements in writing and make sure your party has the equipment and supplies to manage a changed pickup without depending on an immediate alternative.
Plan for an inland camp
DOC places the camping area away from the beach rather than directly at the landing point. Pack so that essential gear can be carried in manageable loads if your chosen arrival requires it. Decide what belongs in the day bag before going to the coast, including drinking water and a warm layer. Allow enough time to return and establish a comfortable evening without repeatedly carrying equipment between the beach and your overnight base.
Independent overnight arrangements
Camping is first-come and free, while transport remains a separate expense. Organise a complete tent, cooking and food-storage setup, and take containers suitable for carrying rubbish home. If travelling with a dog, resolve DOC permission before arranging transport. Share the itinerary with somebody on the mainland and set a check-in plan that does not assume constant connectivity. Reassess the return journey before dismantling camp so you are not left waiting without useful shelter.
