Harvey Bay is a Tennyson Inlet camping option approached through the Rai Valley area. Its flat camping ground should not be confused with an easy towing route. Check the official DOC listing and assess the road before planning a stay.
Assess the Opouri Saddle approach
The route turns from SH6 near Rai Valley into Ronga Road, then follows the Opouri/Tennyson Inlet road over the saddle. DOC describes the sealed approach as steep, narrow and winding, and unsuitable for light towing vehicles.
That warning qualifies the general caravan-access category. Confirm the suitability of your specific towing setup with the appropriate operator, and review current road restrictions before relying on a campground reservation or a navigation app.
Book a basic overnight stay
The adult non-powered fee is NZ$10 nightly and bookings are required. Enter your party accurately and retain the confirmation before setting out. A broad, flat campsite description is not proof that unbooked space will be available.
Keep the first evening manageable: arrive with food, lighting and sleeping equipment ready to use. If your schedule depends on a particularly late arrival or large pitch, confirm those details directly instead of assuming they are included.
Bring drinking water and cooking equipment
DOC confirms non-flush toilets and untreated tap water, which must be boiled before use. Bring a drinking-water reserve and your own cooking setup. An equipped kitchen, showers and laundry have not been verified.
Match meals to the gear you carry and allow space to keep waste separate from food. Dogs are not allowed, and fires are prohibited. Check any other fuel or stove restrictions before deciding how you will cook.
Plan the offsite activities separately
The Nydia Track starts at Duncan Bay, about three kilometres away. Boat launching ramps are at Duncan and Penzance Bays, rather than a verified ramp inside Harvey Bay Campsite.
Arrange those transfers as separate parts of the day, including where equipment and vehicles will be left. Check weather and route suitability before committing to walking, cycling or boating. Our South Island road-trip guide helps avoid combining too many transfers into one camping day.

Common questions
Can I tow a caravan to Harvey Bay?
Caravans are listed as an access category, but DOC specifically says the steep, narrow approach is unsuitable for light towing vehicles. Confirm your actual vehicle combination and current road conditions before booking.
Is there a boat ramp at the campground?
DOC identifies ramps and picnic areas at Duncan and Penzance Bays. Do not interpret the campground's boating category as an onsite launching facility.
Can I walk directly onto the Nydia Track?
The listed start is at Duncan Bay, about 3 km away. Arrange access and assess the track separately from your camping reservation.
