Cameron Flat offers a bookable overnight base on the Makarora side of the Haast Highway. Its useful distinction is straightforward vehicle access to a basic camp, not holiday-park services. Make time for the camp routine before attaching another walk to your driving day.
Arrival from Makarora
DOC places the campground about 15 minutes north of Makarora beside SH6. The surface is sealed to the toilets and gravel beyond. Tents, campervans and caravans are listed.
Check the approach in the official directions before letting a navigation app choose the final turn. Keep arrival essentials together so you can park, check the designated area and establish sleeping arrangements before unpacking the whole vehicle.
Reservations and practical facilities
Bookings are required; the checked adult nightly rate is NZ$15. Facilities include a cooking shelter, non-flush toilets and untreated taps. Boil tap water before use.
Bring a meal you can prepare with your own equipment, plus drinking water for arrival. For longer stays, compare how often your group wants showers or laundry against what is actually confirmed. Neither is established by a shelter symbol. Our DOC campsite guide explains that distinction.
Read the predator-control notice
An associated DOC alert remained listed on 26 September 2026. It describes a completed March 2026 predator-control operation, an area open with warning signs, and possible toxic bait or carcasses. Do not touch either; follow current signs. Dogs and fires are prohibited at the campground.
Read the notice before unloading with children so the group understands what not to pick up. The notice does not provide pitch-by-pitch conditions, and an old screenshot is not a replacement for checking the current listing.
Arrange questions before travel
There is no visitor centre in Makarora; DOC directs enquiries to Haast or Mount Aspiring visitor centres. Resolve vehicle, accessibility and arrival questions before departure rather than leaving them for a service that is not there.
Separate a campsite reservation from permission and conditions for nearby activities. Keep an alternative evening plan that does not depend on completing a walk. Recheck the official Cameron Flat listing before travelling.

Common questions
Is the campground reached entirely on sealed road?
No. DOC says the road is sealed as far as the toilets and gravel beyond that point.
Does the predator-control notice mean the park is closed?
The notice checked on 26 September 2026 says the operation area is open with warning signs. Follow those signs and do not touch bait or animal carcasses; recheck for changes.
